Yesterday was my birthday and we celebrated with a family dinner on Saturday evening. The highlight of a birthday dinner is the birthday cake, and this one was really special. With a little help from mom and dad, my eight-year-old granddaughter made my birthday cake.
Nora has been one of my kitchen helper since she was a toddler. She loves baking and cooking.
My Birthday Cake Story
When we were sorting through my mother-in-love’s cookbooks, Nora found a Betty Crocker Cookbook for Boys and Girls. After perusing the cookbook, she asked me what my favorite cake was and, of course, my answer was chocolate. She then informed me that my birthday was on National Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day (thank you, Highlights Magazine). She was determined to make my cake, and, with a bit of help from her parents, she made a wonderful cake.
Mentor All Learners
My heart for home and teaching skills like cooking, baking, organizing, etc. extends beyond to homemakers. If you want to help and learn in my kitchen, you are more than welcome regardless of your age or gender. My sons started learning to cook at a young age and my grandchildren have started to help in the kitchen as toddlers. If you can follow simple directions like “unwrap the cube of butter,” then you are ready to start helping and learning.
Homemakers Take Action
Our love for our homes requires that we take two actions. The first action is to share the skills that we have mastered. Do you excel at cleaning and organizing, cooking and baking, decorating and crafting? It’s time to start sharing your skills with those who need to learn those skills.
The second action is to seek out mentoring and instruction from someone who has mastered the skills you need to learn. If you struggle with cooking, ask a friend who makes yummy meals to help you expand your cooking and meal planning skills. It’s important to remember that you always have something you can teach and you will always have something you can learn.
So, who are you going to teach and who are you going to learn from? I hope you will mentor and find a mentor to share and expand your skills. Your investment of time, learning, and sharing that you put into your home reflects your love for it. I would love to see and hear about what you are learning and teaching!
Thank you for letting me share my heart for home and family,
