I love snow and it’s an unpredictable entity in our setting in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. This week has been beautiful with snowfall nearly every day and a reduced work schedule! Since I work at a university, snow days are rare because we don’t have calendar space for “makeup days.” That makes every snow day special!
My heart is all about enjoying time with family. We make a concerted effort to schedule family time throughout the year whether it be holidays or burger contests or spontaneous fun. Snow provided us with the opportunity for some spontaneous fun.
Rod measures the snow
The snow started Sunday evening. My husband and I enjoy just watching the flakes fall. It brings a special quiet and lightness to the world around us. The kid in him always has to know just how much we have. He found a tape measure and found four inches before we turned in for the night.
Monday morning brought an alert that my office would open two hours late. However, since we commute together I went in at the normal time. I had been at work for an hour when the decision was made to make it a “Snow Day.” So I was at work without a ride home for many hours.
Fortunately, my oldest son and daughter-in-love live next to our campus! I walked up to their house for a visit and participated in their snowy afternoon playtime.
Ronan is ready!
Last year, Ronan was not excited about the cold or the snow. This year he was ready to go. He quickly learned how to “make” snowballs. He would say the magic words, “Gram, please make me a snowball” and I would make him a snowball to throw. As you can imagine, his three-year-old was not real accurate with trying to hit his dad or sisters with snowballs.
He was sweet and posed for a selfie with me. Then he was off to take another trip down the hill in the sled.
Nora loves snow!
This sweet girl was excited to get outside and very resistant to going back inside! It didn’t matter how cold she got. She was too busy making snow angels, sledding down the little hill, and throwing snowballs to consider getting warm in the house.
Ilona the Snow Angel
Our snow angel was quite particular with getting her snow angel perfect and was disgusted when her little friend from next door walked right through it. Then, she made another…that her little brother walked through. (Boys and brothers! I remember that same frustration as a kid! Insert smile!) Then, again, she made another…that she carefully guarded until she got distracted with wanting to sled some more.
It was a great afternoon that ended with cocoa and a movie. I love snuggling with the grand-kiddos but will confess that I may have snoozed a few moments while we watched the movie.
I only had to work one full day this week and a couple of partial days. However, it doesn’t really feel like working when at least one of those partial days was remotely from home.
Do you get to enjoy snow days, or beach days, or picnics? The venue or weather is not as important as the time spent. Take advantage of the opportunities to play and enjoy your family! I would love to see pics of your favorite family gatherings! Please share in the comments below.
