Before four and a half years ago, I doubt I used the word “undetectable.” However, when I heard that word yesterday in a phone conversation, my heart leaped with joy and relief. My cancer markers were undetectable!
The dictionary definition of “undetectable” is “not able to be detected.” Synonyms include invisible, imperceptible, unnoticeable. My cancer cannot be found.
My Journey with Cancer
Three years ago, I shared a bit about my journey with thyroid cancer. As the journey continues, there are high mountains and deep valleys. While the cancer is undetectable, the effects of no longer having a thyroid are very noticeable. I walk a fine line between fatigue and jittery anxiety as diet, exercise, weight, and sleep all impact the effectiveness of the medications intended to keep me “normal.”
I remember when I first shared with friends that I had thyroid cancer and the reaction was often that it was a “good” cancer to have if you had to have cancer because it was curable. Yes, it is curable and can be kept undetectable. However, the side effects of the treatment are lifelong and challenging. Despite the struggle to maintain normal, it is definitely the preferred outcome.
My Faith is Key
My faith has been a key part of my journey. It has brought me the evidence of health in the way of undetectable cancer and the hope of an abundant life that I anticipate as I work with my medical team to not just survive but to thrive.
As I move into the new year in a new-to-us home, I am excited to move ahead. I look forward to developing my talents and skills as a homemaker. I will be building disciplines that lead to greater health and well-being. My journey is intentionally towards greater faith and ministry.
